September 2019 Musings

Welcome to September and the beginning of the hurricane season. Dorian is racing towards Florida and some of our neighbors are on their way South for emergency preparations. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of them this Labor Day Weekend.

I had lots of fun during my birthday month and after frequent indulgences I am back in my healthy eating habit. It was fun to celebrate with my favorite treats like fried oysters, cheesecake and ice cream! Now back to reality after a private moment on the scale! I consider being happy and healthy my greatest gift and I count my blessings every day, that includes all of you, my fiber friends!

In August I passed the goal of 500 students in my workshops and I am grateful for all the 5 star reviews. I purposely did not schedule any demo dates, workshops or urgent restoration jobs during my birthday month to allow time and energy for celebrations.

In September we will be celebrating Dave’s birthday and there will be more fetivities, although Fresh and Raw eating is more his style. Getting together with family in South Carolina will be fun, the granddaughters are growing up fast and starting new milestones, like high school, cheerleading and tutoring. There is a high school football game in my future!

The weekend after that celebration I am excited about our annual Heritage Weekend coming up at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway on September 21st. and 22nd. This will be my 15th. year of celebrating our Appalachian Heritage. It’s always fun to see many of my Guild fiber friends and local customers who check out my latest tools and creations. We especially enjoy the mountain music and dancing and the world-famous annual Gee Haw Whimmy Diddle Championship. For details and event schedule, click here:

As usual, I will demonstrate heritage lace. If you are close, plan to come by and say hello!

During all the birthday festivities I actually worked on creating more of the popular Victorian Christmas ornaments and some new lace coasters for the holiday demos and shows. I also replenished my bracelet collection and added some lovely hairbands and ear warmers. Lots of new design ideas are rotating in my head, some apply to my personal holiday gift ideas as well.

It is never too early to start thinking about holiday gift giving or to give a gift to yourself! You might enjoy a gift of crochet instructions by checking out my 4 workshop videos on or enjoy a copy of one or both of my books, available on under my name. The videos and books make great anytime gifts as well, but especially for the holidays. Give a gift of crochet joy!

Last but not least, why not plan a trip to the mountains the end of October to participate in this year’s Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair? I will be teaching 7 workshops from October 24th. to 27th. Check out the schedule now before my classes fill up. Some are nearing capacity now.

Here is wishing you a restful Labor Day weekend and a happy September! Enjoy the last blessings of summer and may you be safe from the wrath of hurricanes.
