October 2019 Musings

Fall is here! The temperatures do not reflect the spirit of the season, we still have record heat and bumper crops of tomatoes and other garden blessings. Only generous watering is keeping my small garden alive! I am so ready for foggy mornings and colorful leaves, they should be spectacular this year due to the wet spring and hot summer.

Spirits were high this past weekend at the Folk Art Center, where we celebrated the time-honored tradition of Heritage Weekend. This was my 15th. Year! It always puts me into a time warp, same artists and animals, only a bit older. Even the sheep shearing and herding events and our familiar Bluegrass and Mountain musicians and cloggers, as well as the same food truck with good mountain vittles and BBQ. It made me happy to be such a creature of habit!

It was great to have so many visitors from far and wide, many creating a tradition to introduce their children to activities before electronics. I loved seeing some of my regulars (you know who you are!) and recruited several visitors to join me at the upcoming Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair (SAFF) in my 4 workshops that still have spaces left. As of now, there is room in Classic Hairpin Lace, Fabulous Broomstick Lace, Heirloom Crochet Thread Lace, and Crochet Design Secrets.  For more information and to register, go to SAFF 2019

As usual, lots of our visitors stopped by my table to watch me demonstrate Broomstick and Hairpin Lace, many of them mention that they know basic crochet but have never done Heritage Lace techniques. Of course, if they cannot attend SAFF at the end of October, I always have copies of my 2 books handy and will sign them for the intended recipient. You can find a link to my 2 books: “Heritage Crochet in a New Light” and “Crochet for Knitters, a Marriage of Hook and Needles” on Amazon under my name or go to Rita on Amazon

Remember, they also make great holiday gifts! If you prefer to learn online rather than from a book, be sure to check out my 4 workshop videos on Udemy. Also another great gift idea for yourself or someone you love!

While having all this September fun, I also completed 2 restorations and have a pineapple tablecloth coming in for some TLC.

A special treat is happening at the end of this month because my 2 sisters and their spouses are coming in for our annual reunion, just in time for Halloween dress-up! We celebrate hardy in our neighborhood and the adults have as much fun as the kids.

Life is good!

Enjoy the cooler weather with some apple pie and cider and maybe learning something new to create personalized holiday gifts.

Happy fall!
